VIX regime playbook switch
Instead of running one strategy all the time, this system lets India VIX choose the approach. In calm markets it buys options to fade stretched moves, in normal markets it follows the trend with bought options, in panic it sells an iron condor around the strikes with the most open interest, and in extreme fear it stays in cash. Position size and stop distance also change with the regime. How it trades

PRE-BUILT · DEFAULTSWhere it made and lost money
Most trades were bought calls or puts held for three sessions, so the strategy needed a real move. The 11 trades held through a NIFTY fall of more than 1% made ₹1,66,031, mostly from bought puts. The 17 held while NIFTY stayed within 1% lost ₹1,05,876 to time decay, and 7 held through a rise of more than 1% lost ₹40,684, suggesting calls were often on the wrong side. Entries with India VIX above 14.5 lost ₹1,37,264 over 13 trades, as dearer options needed bigger moves, while the 11.5-14.5 band made ₹81,278 over 18. Choppy entry days lost ₹61,058 over 13. Figures are before costs.
About this strategy
- Each morning, classify yesterday's India VIX close: below 13 calm, 13-20 normal, 20-25 panic, 25 or above extreme. Size is two lots, halved in panic; extreme rounds to zero, meaning no trade.
- Calm: if yesterday's close is near the bottom of its 20-day Bollinger band (%B under 0.1), buy the ATM call at 09:20; near the top (above 0.9), buy the ATM put.
- Normal: if yesterday's close is above the 20-day EMA and that is above the 50-day EMA, buy the ATM call; if below both, buy the ATM put.
- Panic: sell a put 50 points below the highest-put-OI strike and a call 50 points above the highest-call-OI strike, each with a wing 100 points further out.
- Stop when the NIFTY future moves against the trade by 1, 1.5 or 2 ATRs, depending on the regime.
- Exit bought options after three sessions at 15:15; hold the condor to its weekly expiry. One position at a time.
Why traders use it
Markets behave differently at different volatility levels: calm markets tend to revert, normal ones trend, and panicky ones swing widely but often within levels where option writers are positioned. Matching the tactic and size to the volatility regime is a common idea in professional risk management. Going to cash in extreme fear avoids trading when moves are least predictable. The approach is easy to follow because India VIX is published every day.
The year in plain words
With default settings on NIFTY from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026, two lots per trade, the strategy took 39 trades and won only 28%, losing ₹32,548 before costs and ₹37,735 after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage. The shape was lopsided: the 11 winners averaged ₹28,290, with the largest at ₹1,18,625, while losers averaged ₹12,276. Twenty-three trades ended on the three-session time exit and 15 on the ATR stop. October (₹50,594) and March (₹67,662) were strong, but every month from April to September lost money. The drawdown before costs reached ₹2,29,252.
What the settings do
Risks
- Most trades are bought options held for three days, so time decay works against every trade that does not move quickly.
- The result depends on a few very large winners; a ₹2.29 lakh drawdown before costs shows how long the dry spells can be.
- The VIX thresholds are round numbers, not tested boundaries.
- The trend rule replaces an unspecified model in the original idea, so results may differ from that description.

Questions traders ask
How do you trade NIFTY using India VIX levels?
One approach is to define VIX bands and use a different tactic in each: fade extremes when VIX is low, follow trends when it is moderate, sell defined-risk premium when it is high, and step aside when it is extreme. This strategy uses bands at 13, 20 and 25.
Is the VIX regime switch strategy profitable?
Not in this test. From 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 it lost ₹32,548 before costs and ₹37,735 after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage (statutory charges not included), over 39 trades. Past results do not guarantee future ones.
Why sell an iron condor when VIX is high?
High VIX means option premiums are rich, so a defined-risk condor collects more for the same width. Placing the shorts beyond the strikes with the most open interest uses those levels as likely support and resistance.
What is Bollinger %B?
It shows where the price sits within its Bollinger band: 0 at the lower band, 1 at the upper band. Readings below 0.1 or above 0.9 are treated as stretched in calm markets.
