Bollinger-Keltner squeeze
The Bollinger-Keltner squeeze looks for quiet spells that are about to end. When the Bollinger Bands shrink inside the Keltner Channel, volatility is unusually low; when they expand back out, the squeeze has released and a move is expected. This intraday NIFTY futures version trades that release on 15-minute bars, takes its direction from the MACD histogram, and trails the exit with an 8-period EMA.How it trades
Results
PRE-BUILT · DEFAULTSWhere it made and lost money
Nearly all the profit came from trend days that closed near their high or low: 23 trades made ₹1,15,760, because a squeeze release on such a day keeps running and the 8 EMA trail lets it. Choppy days lost ₹16,658 over 14 trades and quiet days ₹23,952 over 38, as releases faded into the range. Days that closed below their open made ₹84,083 over 43 trades, showing the short side did well in this period. After a VIX close above 14.5 trades made ₹60,320 over 18, while the normal 11.5 to 14.5 band lost ₹7,430 over 37.
About this strategy
- Build 15-minute bars of the near-month NIFTY future, continuous across days, with 20-period Bollinger Bands (2 standard deviations) and a 20-period Keltner Channel (1.5 ATR).
- A squeeze is on when both Bollinger Bands sit inside the Keltner Channel.
- When a bar closes with the squeeze off after the previous bar had it on, check the MACD (12, 26, 9) histogram: above zero means buy, below zero means sell.
- Enter one lot on the next tick, for release bars closing between 09:30 and 14:45.
- Stop at the Bollinger middle line of the release bar; skip the trade if price is already beyond it.
- Once a bar closes on the wrong side of the 8 EMA, exit on the first tick through that bar's low (for a long) or high (for a short).
- Close anything still open at 15:15; only one trade at a time.
Why traders use it
Volatility moves in cycles: tight ranges are often followed by expansion. Bollinger Bands measure volatility with standard deviation and Keltner Channels with average true range, so when the first fits inside the second the market is compressed by both measures. Using the MACD histogram for direction and the 8 EMA for the exit gives a complete, rule-based momentum trade. The squeeze is built into many charting packages, which keeps it popular with intraday futures traders.
The year in plain words
On NIFTY from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 the default intraday mode took 76 trades and won half, but the average win (₹4,740) was nearly twice the average loss (₹2,633). Fifty-one trades left on the EMA exit, 7 on the stop and 18 at 15:15. Net P&L was ₹80,059 before costs and ₹65,656 after ₹20 per order and slippage, profit factor 1.8 before costs, with a ₹17,492 drawdown. March made ₹38,791. Trend days produced ₹1,15,760, while quiet and choppy sessions lost about ₹40,000 combined.
What the settings do
Risks
- The profit came largely from a few trend days; missing them would change the result a lot.
- The stop at the Bollinger middle varies in distance, so some losses are larger than usual.
- Releases can come in either direction within a few bars, and the MACD may point the wrong way at the turn.
- Results come from one year of NIFTY data with these exact settings and may not hold in different conditions.
Who it suits
Intraday futures traders comfortable with indicator-based rules who can monitor or automate 15-minute signals, accept a 50% win rate with larger winners, and have margin for a NIFTY futures lot.
Questions traders ask
What is the Bollinger Keltner squeeze?
It occurs when the Bollinger Bands move inside the Keltner Channel, meaning volatility measured by standard deviation has dropped below volatility measured by average true range. It marks a period of compression. The squeeze releases when the bands move back outside the channel.
How is the direction of the trade chosen?
By the MACD histogram at the release bar. If it is above zero, momentum is up and the strategy buys; if below zero, it sells. The squeeze only says a move is likely, not which way.
Is the squeeze strategy profitable on NIFTY futures?
In this backtest from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 it made ₹80,059 before costs and ₹65,656 after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage, with a ₹17,492 drawdown before costs. Statutory charges are not included. Most of the profit came from trend days. Past results do not guarantee future ones.
How does the 8 EMA exit work?
While in a long, once a 15-minute bar closes below the 8-period EMA, the strategy exits on the first tick below that bar's low; a newer bar closing below the EMA replaces the level. Shorts work the other way. It lets winners run while the trend holds.
