Double Supertrend
The double Supertrend uses two Supertrend lines of different speeds on the same 5-minute NIFTY futures chart. A trade opens only when both lines agree: both up for a long, both down for a short. It closes as soon as the faster line flips back, or at 15:15. The slow line is meant to keep the system out of chop, and the fast line is meant to get it out quickly when the move ends. How it trades

PRE-BUILT · DEFAULTSWhere it made and lost money
Like most trend systems, this one depends entirely on getting trend days. In this test 66 trend days earned ₹1,92,139 with a 58% win rate, because once both lines agreed the fast Supertrend stayed on the right side until 15:15. Choppy days lost ₹1,09,315 over 81 trades: the slow line did not keep the system out, and the fast line flipped back soon after each entry. Quiet sessions lost ₹49,880 over 107 trades. Somewhat unexpectedly, days after a calm India VIX close below 11.5 made ₹54,946, while nervous days above 14.5 lost ₹21,365, as volatile days produced more whipsaw flips.
About this strategy
- Build 5-minute bars from near-month NIFTY futures and draw a fast Supertrend (10-bar ATR, multiplier 3) and a slow one (30-bar ATR, multiplier 9).
- When flat, and a bar closing between 09:20 and 15:00 leaves both lines pointing up with at least one of them having just turned, buy one lot on the next tick.
- Do the same in reverse for a short when both lines turn down.
- Exit on the next tick after a bar closes with the fast line flipped against the trade. If that bar also turns both lines the other way, the opposite trade opens immediately.
- There is no other stop. Anything still open at 15:15 is squared off.
Why traders use it
A single Supertrend flips often in sideways markets. Requiring a much slower line to agree is a simple way to trade only with the bigger move, while still using the faster line for a quick exit. The combination is easy to see on a chart and easy to automate, which makes it a popular step up from a single-Supertrend system for intraday futures traders.
The year in plain words
On NIFTY futures from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026, the system took 255 trades and won 45% of them, making ₹27,036 before costs with a profit factor of 1.05. Winners averaged ₹4,924 against losers of ₹3,790. 144 trades ended on a fast-line flip and 111 at 15:15. October, November and March together made over ₹83,000, but May and August each lost about ₹18,000-20,000 and the drawdown reached ₹69,056. After ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage the result is a ₹33,189 loss, so the pre-cost edge does not survive trading costs.
What the settings do
Risks
- The only exit is the fast line's flip, so a sharp move inside a 5-minute bar is not cut short; the worst trade lost ₹13,656.
- The system trades about 21 times a month, and costs turn its small edge into a loss.
- The continuous futures series jumps at each expiry, which can produce a false flip at the start of a new contract.
- A drawdown of ₹69,056 before costs on one lot needs patience and margin.
Who it suits
Traders who like Supertrend-based rules and want a long-and-short futures system that is simple to follow or automate, with margin for a NIFTY lot and tolerance for long losing spells.
Questions traders ask
What is the double Supertrend strategy?
It uses two Supertrend lines, one fast and one slow, on the same chart. A trade is taken only when both point the same way, and it is closed when the fast one turns. The slow line filters out weak signals; the fast line handles the exit.
Is the double Supertrend profitable on NIFTY?
In this backtest from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 it made ₹27,036 before costs but lost ₹33,189 after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage, with a ₹69,056 maximum drawdown before costs. Past results do not guarantee future results.
Which Supertrend settings does it use?
The fast line is Supertrend (10, 3) and the slow one Supertrend (30, 9), both on 5-minute bars. All four numbers and the bar size are settings, so other combinations can be tested.
Does it hold positions overnight?
No. Everything is closed by 15:15, well before the 15:40 F&O close. The two Supertrend lines are calculated continuously across days, but trades are strictly intraday.
