How the F&O ban works

Every F&O stock has a market-wide position limit (MWPL): the most open interest NSE allows in its futures and options across all traders. When a stock’s future-equivalent open interest crosses 95% of MWPL at the end of a day, it enters the ban period from the next session. During the ban, traders can only reduce or close positions in its futures and options; the stock itself trades normally in the cash market. It leaves the ban once open interest falls below 80% of MWPL.

How traders use the ban list

A stock entering the ban often sees futures and options positions being squared off, which can move its price and its option premiums. Stocks close to 90% are worth watching before the next session, and stocks in ban near the exit level can see fresh positions return once they come out.

What is the F&O ban list?

NSE puts a stock in the F&O ban period when the open interest across all its futures and options crosses 95% of its market-wide position limit (MWPL). While it is in ban, no one can open new positions in its futures and options; existing positions can only be reduced or closed.

What is MWPL?

The market-wide position limit is the most open interest NSE allows in a stock’s derivatives across all traders, set from the stock’s free float and liquidity. MWPL % on this page is the stock’s future-equivalent open interest divided by its MWPL.

When does a stock come out of the ban?

When its open interest falls below 80% of MWPL at the end of a trading day, it leaves the ban from the next session. Until then it stays in ban however long it takes.

Can I trade a stock that is in the F&O ban?

You can still buy and sell the stock in the cash market. In its futures and options you can only square off or reduce existing positions; increasing them attracts a penalty from the exchange.

When is the F&O ban list updated?

NSE publishes it every trading day after the close. A list made on one evening applies to the next trading session, which is why this page shows both dates.

What are possible entrants and possible exits?

Possible entrants are stocks not in ban whose open interest is already at 90% of MWPL or more. Possible exits are stocks in ban that are within 5 points of the 80% exit level. Both can change with one day’s open interest.
