What is an option chain?
An option chain is the full list of calls and puts of an underlying for one expiry. Each row is a strike: the call's premium, open interest, volume and IV on the left, the put's on the right. It is the starting point for picking strikes, reading where option writers are positioned and seeing how big a move the market is pricing in.
How to read the NSE option chain
- Strike - the price at which the option can be exercised. The at-the-money (ATM) strike, nearest the price, is highlighted.
- LTP and change - the last traded premium and how much it has moved since the previous close.
- Open interest (OI) - contracts open at that strike; change in OI shows positions added or closed today.
- Volume - contracts traded today. High volume with rising OI means fresh positions; with falling OI, positions being closed.
- IV - implied volatility, the volatility the premium prices in. Higher IV means more expensive options.
- In the money - calls below the price and puts above it (shaded) have intrinsic value; the rest are all time value.
Option chain analysis: what traders look for
The strike with the most call open interest above the price is read as resistance and the one with the most put open interest below it as support, because writers defend the strikes they have sold. Fresh writing at a strike strengthens that level and unwinding weakens it. The put-call ratio sums up the balance: above 1, more puts are open than calls. The ATM straddle - the ATM call plus the ATM put - is what the market charges for a move either way, so its price over the underlying is the move expected by expiry.
On today's NIFTY chain that reads as: fair price 22,929.60, the most call OI at 23,000 and the most put OI at 22,700, and a straddle of 260.65 pricing in about ±1.1% - roughly 22,669 to 23,190 by 19 Oct 2026.

What is an option chain?
An option chain lists every call and put of an underlying for one expiry, strike by strike, with the premium (LTP), open interest, change in OI, volume and implied volatility. Calls are on the left, puts on the right, strikes in the middle.
How do you read the NSE option chain?
Start at the at-the-money (ATM) strike, the one nearest the price. Calls below it and puts above it are in the money. Large call open interest above the price is read as resistance and large put open interest below it as support; the ATM straddle premium shows the move the market expects by expiry.
What do ITM, ATM and OTM mean in an option chain?
At the money (ATM) is the strike closest to the price. A call is in the money (ITM) when its strike is below the price and out of the money (OTM) when it is above; for puts it is the other way round. ITM options carry intrinsic value; OTM options are all time value.
How do you analyse an option chain for intraday trading?
Watch the change in open interest, not just the total: fresh call writing above the price caps rallies, fresh put writing below it supports dips, and unwinding at a strike weakens that level. Track the PCR through the day and compare the ATM straddle with the day’s range so far.
What does PCR mean in the option chain?
The put-call ratio of open interest: total put OI divided by total call OI for the expiry. Above 1 means more puts are open than calls - usually read as writers supporting the market; below about 0.7 as caution. Extreme readings often come before reversals.
Where can I see the Bank Nifty or Sensex option chain?
Every F&O index has its own page: the Bank Nifty option chain at /option-chain/banknifty and the Sensex option chain at /option-chain/sensex, plus FINNIFTY, MIDCPNIFTY, NIFTYNXT50 and BANKEX - 9 indices and 213 F&O stocks in all, each with every open expiry.
Is the option chain live?
It updates every minute during market hours; after the close it shows the day’s last values, with the time of the data shown above the table. For a streaming chain with Greeks and what-if analysis, open it in the free Quantsapp app.
