Daily OI build-up
Indian traders read open interest together with price to judge who is in control: price up with OI up is a long build-up, price down with OI up a short build-up. This positional NIFTY futures strategy turns that daily reading into trades. After a long build-up day it buys the next morning; after a short build-up it sells. The trade ends on the opposite reading, an ATR stop, or after five sessions. How it trades

PRE-BUILT · DEFAULTSWhere it made and lost money
In this test the profit came from short build-ups that led into real falls. The 9 trades during which NIFTY fell more than 1% made +₹2,89,626 and all won, while the 17 trades during which it stayed within ±1% lost ₹31,359, as positions drifted until the opposite quadrant or the five-day limit closed them. Entries with NIFTY already below its 20-day average made ₹2,03,585 over 28 trades, against ₹42,455 over 22 in an uptrend. Entry days that opened with a gap down made ₹1,48,824 over 9 trades. Evenings with normal India VIX were the weakest group, making ₹34,010 over 25 trades with a 36% win rate.
About this strategy
- At each session's close, compare the near-month NIFTY future's close and the open interest of all futures months combined with the previous session.
- A rise of at least 0.3% with OI up 2% or more is a long build-up; a fall of 0.3% with OI up 2% is a short build-up. Price up with OI down 2% is short covering, and price down with OI down is long unwinding.
- At 09:20 the next session, buy one lot after a long build-up or sell one lot after a short build-up; covering and unwinding days open nothing.
- Place a stop one daily ATR(14) from the entry.
- Exit at the close of a session that shows the opposite reading (short build-up or long unwinding for a long; long build-up or short covering for a short), or at the close of the fifth session held.
- A trade still open at the monthly futures expiry is closed there and not rolled.
Why traders use it
Open interest shows whether money is entering or leaving futures. Rising OI alongside a move suggests new positions are driving it, which many traders take as conviction behind the trend; falling OI suggests the move comes from existing positions closing and may fade. The four-quadrant reading is one of the most widely watched daily summaries in Indian F&O. Using all months' OI combined prevents the monthly roll from looking like a build-up or an unwinding.
The year in plain words
On NIFTY futures from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 with default settings, the strategy took 50 trades, won half, and made ₹2,46,040 before costs with a profit factor of 2.03. Winners averaged ₹19,442, about twice the average loser of ₹9,601. Most trades ended on an opposite quadrant (29), with 8 at the five-day limit, 8 at expiry and only 5 at the stop. March, April and September made about ₹2.49 lakh together, while February lost ₹33,334; the drawdown reached ₹59,350. With few trades, costs cost little: ₹2,31,247 remained after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage.
What the settings do
Risks
- Trades are held overnight for up to five sessions, so gaps can move well past the ATR stop.
- Most of the profit came from a small number of trades during sharp falls, so a year without such falls could look very different.
- OI changes can reflect hedging or arbitrage rather than directional conviction.
- Positions are closed at the monthly futures expiry rather than rolled, which can cut short a working trade.
Who it suits
Positional traders who follow daily OI data, can hold one NIFTY futures lot for several days with margin, and are comfortable with a 50% win rate in which a few large winners carry the year.
Questions traders ask
What are long build-up and short build-up?
They describe price and open interest moving together. Long build-up is price up with OI up, read as fresh buying. Short build-up is price down with OI up, read as fresh selling. Short covering is price up with OI down, and long unwinding is price down with OI down.
Is trading OI build-up profitable on NIFTY?
In this backtest from 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 it made ₹2,46,040 before costs and ₹2,31,247 after ₹20 per order and bid-ask slippage, before statutory charges. The before-costs drawdown was ₹59,350, and much of the profit came from a few sharp falls. Past results do not guarantee future ones.
Why combine OI across all futures months?
Near expiry, traders move positions from the current month to the next. Looking at one contract alone, that shift looks like unwinding in one and build-up in the other. Summing all months shows the true change in overall positions.
How long does a trade last?
Usually a day or two; the median hold in this test was one day. A trade ends at the close of the first session showing the opposite reading, at the ATR stop, or at the close of the fifth session.
