What is India VIX?
India VIX is the volatility index of the National Stock Exchange. NSE calculates it from the order book of NIFTY 50 options - the near and next month contracts - using a method adapted from the CBOE VIX. The result is the volatility, in percent a year, that option prices imply for NIFTY over the next 30 calendar days.
How traders read it
VIX tells you how big the market expects NIFTY’s moves to be, not which way. A rising VIX means option premiums are getting dearer and swings wider, which suits option buyers; a falling VIX shrinks premiums, which suits option sellers. Because fear spikes when the market drops, VIX usually rises on NIFTY’s down days and eases on its up days - over the past year it rose on 62% of the days NIFTY futures fell. Very high readings have often come near market bottoms, and very low readings can come before a sharp move.
India VIX and option strategies
Many option traders check VIX before choosing a strategy: selling premium (a short strangle or an iron condor) when VIX is high and expected to cool, buying it (a long straddle) when VIX is low before an event. Use the vega calculator to see how much a one-point change in volatility moves an option, and the margin calculator to see what a strategy blocks.

What is India VIX?
India VIX is NSE’s volatility index. It is calculated from the best bid and ask prices of NIFTY 50 options and shows the volatility the options market expects over the next 30 calendar days, as an annualised percentage. A higher VIX means traders expect bigger NIFTY swings; it is often called the market’s fear gauge.
What is a normal India VIX level?
Since March 2009 the median daily close has been 16.66. Below 12 is very low and usually comes with a calm, rising market; 15 to 20 is moderate; above 20 shows fear, and above 30 has only been seen in crashes such as March 2020. Over the past year VIX averaged 14.06.
What does an India VIX of 14.38 mean?
A VIX of 14.38 means the options market expects NIFTY to move about 0.75% in a day (about 170 points) and about 4.1% over the next 30 days (about 932 points), up or down, roughly two times in three. It says how big the move may be, not its direction.
Why does India VIX rise when NIFTY falls?
When the market falls, traders rush to buy puts for protection, which pushes option prices - and VIX - up. Over the past year, VIX rose on 62% of the days NIFTY futures fell, and fell on 75% of the days they rose.
What is the highest India VIX ever?
The highest close in our data, which starts in March 2009, is 83.61 on 24 Mar 2020, during the Covid crash. The lowest is 9.15 on 26 Dec 2025.
How does India VIX affect option prices?
VIX moves with the implied volatility of NIFTY options. When VIX rises, option premiums get more expensive, which helps option buyers and hurts sellers; when it falls, premiums shrink. Vega tells you how much an option gains or loses per one-point change in volatility.
Can you trade India VIX?
The index itself cannot be bought. Traders take a view on volatility through NIFTY options instead: buying options, for example a long straddle, gains if volatility rises, and selling them gains if it falls. Each carries its own risks.
What are India VIX timings?
NSE calculates India VIX during market hours, 09:15 to 15:30 IST on trading days. Outside those hours the page shows the last close.
