What is open interest?
Open interest is the number of option contracts that are open at a strike - written and not yet closed or expired. Unlike volume, it only rises when a new position is opened and only falls when one is closed.
How traders read it
Option writers are usually the larger, better-hedged side, so the strikes where they hold the most open interest tend to act as levels: a big call OI wall above the price as resistance, a big put OI wall below it as support. Fresh additions at a strike strengthen that level; unwinding weakens it. Read it with price, the put-call ratio and max pain.
