The Advance Decline chart measures the breadth of a market move. A stock is advancing when it closes above the prior day's close and declining when it closes below; net advances are the difference between the two counts.
This lesson explains how to read it. If net advances rise with the index, the uptrend is broad-based and more robust. If net advances fall while the index rises, a few large stocks may be carrying the index and breadth is weak.
