How to read FII DII data

Cash market. Each day FIIs (foreign portfolio investors) and DIIs (mutual funds, insurers, banks and pension funds) report what they bought and sold on the exchanges. The net value is purchases minus sales. Persistent FII selling tends to pressure large caps and the rupee; DII buying, fed by SIP flows, has often absorbed it - which is why the two lines above frequently mirror each other.

Futures and options. NSE also publishes every participant’s long and short open interest. The FII net position in index futures is the most watched number: a large net short signals a bearish or hedged stance, and a sharp change in it shows new bets being placed or old ones covered. Because Pro and Client are the other side of the same contracts, retail clients are often positioned opposite to FIIs.

Frequently asked questions

What is FII DII data?

It is the daily record of what foreign institutional investors (FIIs, also called FPIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs: mutual funds, insurers, banks) bought and sold. In the cash market it is published as gross purchase, gross sales and the net value in ₹ crore; in futures and options, NSE publishes each participant’s long and short open interest.

What does FII net buy or net sell mean?

Net value is purchases minus sales. A positive number means FIIs bought more than they sold that day (net buyers); a negative number means they sold more (net sellers). Heavy, sustained FII selling often weighs on the index, while DII buying frequently absorbs it.

What was the FII DII data on 17 Apr 2025?

FIIs bought ₹18,210 crore and sold ₹13,543 crore, a net +4,668 crore. DIIs bought ₹13,774 crore and sold ₹15,780 crore, a net −2,006 crore. NIFTY closed at 23,851.30.

What is long-short open interest in participant data?

For each participant, NSE reports how many futures and options contracts they hold long and short. Long minus short is the net position: a negative index-futures number means FIIs hold more short contracts than long, which traders read as a bearish stance. The change shows what was added or cut that day.

Who are Pro and Client in participant-wise OI?

Pro is proprietary trading: brokers and members trading with their own money. Client is everyone trading through a broker, mostly retail. Together with FII and DII they add up to the whole market, so one side’s long is another side’s short.

When is FII DII data updated?

Once a day after the close. Provisional cash-market figures come out in the evening, and NSE’s participant-wise open interest follows after the F&O session. This page shows the latest trading day as soon as it is published, and any earlier day from the date picker.

Cash-market figures are provisional as published after the close. Data is for information only and is not investment advice. Derivatives trading carries substantial risk. Disclaimer
